Diversity: Undergraduate Recruitment Programs: Teacher Programs

Nano-CEMMS specifically recruits teachers from schools that enroll a significant population of underrepresented students.   The Center is funded through a Math and Science Partnership Grant from the Illinois State Board of Eeucation for its Champaign Unit 4 Nanotechnology Teacher Enhancement Program (CU4NTEP).  This program offers three two-week institutes that allow 30 teachers to work under the mentorship of Center faculty, graduate students, and science educators as they engaged in hands-on research and the development of nanotechnology classroom activities. Nano-CEMMS educators follow the progress of these teachers throughout the year as they present the Nano-CEMMS learning modules to their classes.  Teachers who attended the CU4NTEP institutes reach over 3500 students per year.

Additionally, presentations at many teacher workshops, conferences, and in-service days introduce mathematics, science and industrial arts teachers to nanoscience research and facilitate knowledge transfer to their students.

Teachers Debra Welch from Heritage H.S. and Rita Yagow and Diane Ecker from Champaign Central H.S. work on a laminar flow project.
