Research at NCA&T is conducted at the Center for Advanced Materials and Smart Structures (CAMSS). Materials processing (pulsed laser deposition, magnetron sputtering, thermal evaporation, spin coating, plasma ashing) and characterization equipment are available there for Center investigations.
Characterization techniques such as mechanical (nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy), microstructural (scanning electron and optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis), spectroscopic (micro-Raman, UV-Vis, FTIR) and x-ray diffractometry are available to characterize the materials. CAMSS has an extensive track record in structure-property relationship studies of various ceramic, composite and electronic material systems.
The Direct Write Technologies Laboratory at NCA&T houses state-of-the-art direct deposit equipment consisting of a MicroFab custom built InkJet system, Cordin multi-channel high speed gated intensified camera and Aerotech high resolution 5-axes stage. This type of inkjet system can deposit fluids with varied ranging densities, viscosities and surface tensions. This inkjet print head is mounted onto a 5-axis stage system that can enable deposition of fluids onto curved and complex shaped substrates. An ultra high speed camera is used to capture droplet formation and impingement characteristics on different substrates. |
